It looks like the long winter is not yet over at Greyhound. We’re still trying to make sense of the mileage and job cuts just now going into effect (and trying to come up with alternatives to the slash and burn methods the company is using), and now the company announces plans to go on a witch hunt to further terrorize its workers.
The first round of company “background checks” is resulting in unfair discipline being issued against good, hard-working bus drivers, mechanics and other employees. As the union predicted, there are now false charges being leveled against our members, mail being sent to family members containing false accusations, and intrusions into the lives of our members over matters that have absolutely nothing to do with our jobs.
Now the company is asking employees who have not yet been subjected to these background checks to voluntarily sign releases authorizing the company to dig up false dirt on them. Let’s be clear: witch hunts belong in the garbage heap of history. The union will not stand for any unfair discipline that uses the excuse of a failed background check any more than we stand for any other unfair discipline.
As far as the company’s requests that we sign releases that would give the company carte blanche to harass us, that one is easy. The answer is NO.
