Dept. of Labor to Supervise Local 1700 Officer Elections

ATU Local 1700 members will elect officers this fall to 3-year terms that begin in January. The U.S. Dept. of Labor will supervise these elections, according to a settlement between the union and government over alleged violations during 2004 voting. The election supervisor will ensure the process conforms to the union’s constitution and bylaws, as well as federal law.

A timetable and other details were set at a conference in New York City in August. Notice of the election went out in September and a nominating meeting was held in NYC in October. At press time, ballots were set to be mailed around Nov. 10, and will be counted on Dec. 3.

Elmer Taylor of Philadelphia will chair a 3-member Election Committee provided for under the union’s new bylaws. Taylor and committee members James W. Anderson of Los Angeles and Sandra Frye of Orlando will oversee all aspects of the voting, from notifying each member in good standing about the election, to determining the eligibility of candidates and voters, and reporting the final tally.

Local 1700 has also retained a professional voting company to handle the detail work of mailing, receiving and counting the ballots.

Voting results will be announced as soon as possible on ROADKILL and the union website — www.atu1700.org — and on all union bulletin boards.
