Local 1700 is set to return to the bargaining table with Greyhound on February 11. The company had refused to extend the current contract until Januiary 29, when they announced a two-week extension. Why are only 4 days set aside for talks? It looks like the company might be trying to provoke us into striking, or else to intimidate us into accepting a bad deal. Local 1700 members will resist both courses of action. We demand a decent contract now! Outstanding issues include job security, representation of unorganized Greyhound workers, wages and health care. If the company is willing to meet us on these issues, we will have a deal by Valentine's Day. But we will not be intimidated into accepting a bad deal just to meet a company-set deadline. Meanwhile, a British magazine has reported that First Group, one of the U.K.'s largest bus companies, is negotiating the purchase of Laidlaw.
